Sam Wagstaff
The Andy Warhol DiariesSam Wagstaff is glimpsed in the diary through brief reports rather than a sustained account: a hospitalization, tense social interactions, and, finally, news of his death. The sequence records how he moved through Andy Warhol’s circle while leaving much of his life outside the diary’s frame.
In Warhol’s Social Circle
On October 7, 1986, Warhol noted hearing that both Sam Wagstaff and Robert Mapplethorpe were in the hospital. The entry offers no diagnosis or further circumstances, presenting the news as one item among the movements and concerns of Warhol’s social world.
Strained Exchanges
The next day, Warhol described Sam as being nice to him because Warhol had not taken him anywhere for several days. Paige told Warhol that Sam no longer spoke to her. Warhol said he did not know why Sam behaved that way and characterized him as wanting to be wanted; he also remarked that Sam would be wanted if he worked. He added that Fred was tough on Sam and on everyone. These are Warhol’s judgments in a diary entry, not an independent account of Sam’s motives, but they place him amid fluctuating attention and conflict among the people around Warhol.
Death
In a later entry, Warhol recorded simply that Sam Wagstaff had died a few days earlier. The announcement supplies no details about the death, but it changes the weight of the preceding hospital report: the diary’s brief, unsettled glimpses of Sam end in a compressed notice of his death.
